Quando ammiriamo il carro ultimato nei giorni che precedono la festa o durante la parata che porterà il carro all’assalto finale, osserviamo questo capolavoro nella sua totalità. Ma, sotto i decori, gli strati di cartapesta e le statue vi è una struttura in legna abilmente costruita da un signore di 80 anni che ha l’argento vivo addosso. E’ Angelo Chico.
Intervista ad Angelo Chico (conosciuto a Matera come Janglucchj, come lui tiene a precisare)
Angelo Chico è nato il primo gennaio del 1928, ha 80 anni e ha partecipato alla costruzione di 43 carri.
D. Con quanti maestri cartapestai avete lavorato?
R. Con Francesco Pentasuglia, papà di Michelangelo, con Raffele Epifania, con Nicoletti Francesco e con Michele Pentasuglia.
D. avete creato quindi la struttura per 43 carri…
R. In realtà un’anno il carro l’ho fatto due volte! Nel 1996 quando il carro è stato distrutto nella notte tra il 25 e 26 giugno una settimana prima della festa!! (Nota nostra: Parleremo di questo evento in un post dedicato)
THE CART HAS A SOUL
When we admire the cart completed in the days before the celebration or during the parade that will bring it to the final assault, we observe this masterpiece in its totality. But, under the decoration, the layers of papier mache and the statues there is a soul in wood cleverly built by a 80 year-old gentleman: Angel Chico.
Interview to Angelo Chico (known in Matera by his knickname “small angel”)
He was born on the 1st of January in 1928; he is 80 years old and has collaborated in the realization of 43 carts.
Q. How many artisans have you been working with?
A. With Francesco Pentasuglia, Michelangelo’s father, with Raffele Epifania, with Nicoletti Francesco and with Michelangelo Pentasuglia.
Q. ..up to now you have made he wooden structure for 43 carts!
A. To be true one year I made it twice! It was in 1996 when the cart was destroyed in the night between the 25th and 26th of June! One week before the parade!
